Frenectomy
Improve Speech, Oral Function & Comfort with a Gentle Frenectomy
A tight or restrictive frenum—often referred to as being “tongue-tied” or “lip-tied”—can affect speech, eating, and overall oral health. At Dental Implants & Periodontology of Massapequa, we offer precise and comfortable frenectomy procedures to improve oral function in both children and adults.
What Is a Frenectomy?
A frenectomy is a simple surgical procedure that removes or modifies the frenum—a small band of connective tissue that restricts the movement of the lips, tongue, or cheeks. There are two common types:
- Lingual Frenectomy: Removes or loosens the tissue under the tongue (used to treat tongue-tie)
- Labial Frenectomy: Addresses the frenum between the upper lip and the gums (used to treat lip-tie or assist with denture fit)
Signs You or Your Child May Need a Frenectomy
- Speech difficulties or delayed speech development
- Inability to properly breastfeed (in infants)
- Difficulty sticking out the tongue or moving it freely

Our Frenectomy Approach
At our Long Island Periodontal practice, we encourage gentle and minimally invasive treatments to ensure maximum comfort and fast healing. While the procedure usually takes just a few minutes, it may be performed either by traditional or laser-assisted methods, according to the situation at hand.
What to Expect:
- Evaluation: We examine the frenum and determine how it may affect oral function.
- Procedure: Local anesthesia is administered, and the frenum is cautiously...trimmed or excised.
- Aftercare: Most patients report very little pain and go about their normal activities the same day. Post-op instructions for the best recovery will be provided.
Frenectomy for Adults
While frenectomies are commonly associated with children, many adults also benefit from the procedure—especially if they’ve experienced gum recession, denture issues, or speech concerns for years. We treat patients of all ages with discretion and care.
